Four regions are in progress with more to come in 2013. Thanks to the US Forest Service and California Landscape Conservation Cooperative for funding.

Cal-IPC invites you to participate in a process to review and set strategic management priorities for invasive plants in your region. In the last two years many of you helped to build the statewide invasive plant distribution dataset used by CalWeedMapper to identify management priorities – now we’re using this tool to help regional partners design fundable projects.

The goals of this process are to: (1) identify and scope top eradication priorities in order to pursue funding to implement projects in each region, and (2) to identify key surveillance targets to watch for in each region.

With management funding in short supply, it is critical that projects are based on a solid strategy to achieve long-term conservation benefit. This process helps us all move from an “acres treated” mindset to an “acres protected from spread” mindset.

Components include:

Regional lists of strategic surveillance and eradication priority species

Education and outreach information for these species

The ability to track new occurrence reports of these species in your region

Collaborative funding opportunities through grant-ready projects detailed in a workplan for these strategic species

We have initiated working partnerships in a 5-county central Sierra region, a 3-county central coast region, a 3-county north central region and a 2-county northwest region. We expect to work with partnerships in several more regions in the next year, and hope to work with partnerships in all regions of California in the next 3 years if funding allows. Our process in each region typically involves two meetings to select priority targets and to cost on-the-ground efforts needed to address top-priority eradication targets. Keep posted through your Weed Management Area for meetings in your region. See our regions page to keep tabs on our efforts around the state.

There are two types of online training available for CalWeedMapper:

1) Cal-IPC will customize a “virtual demo” for your WMA meeting where we:

Demonstrate CalWeedMapper (20 minutes)

Take questions on how to use the site (10 minutes)

Use CalWeedMapper to generate a WMA Management Opportunity Report and discuss management opportunities in your WMA (20-30 minutes)

2) Cal-IPC can hold a CalWeedMapper “Train to be a trainer” webinars. After attending this training, participants will be able to demonstrate CalWeedMapper and demonstrate how it informs strategic invasive plant management planning.

To participate in this class, Cal-IPC:

Asks for a commitment that you show CalWeedMapper in at least one relevant meeting this year

Provides a .pdf or powerpoint you can adapt for your meeting

Provides Q&As so you can easily address questions people often ask

Send an email to mapping@cal-ipc.org expressing interest in either of these options.
